DESIGN AWARDS ADVICE
Concept For Living article contribution with Ashley Interiors

Describe in brief your room set.
The first year we decided to cater for the audience we expected to be at the Exhibition. Because we were relatively new designers we decided to aim at the public rather than the Judges Award. The result was a dramatic, luxurious but elegant room with a modern twist. We incorporated different styles and eras and went for a kind of theatrical approach. The following year we decided upon a different approach, we wanted to be a real contender for The Judges Award and therefore focused on the strength of the magazine, thinking about modern elegance. The design was contemporary but also luxurious.

What problems did you have to overcome in designing and constructing the room set?
I think the main problem we encountered in the first year was that we didn’t realise what we were getting ourselves into. You must make sure that you have decent walls that you have to construct yourself. To sum it up it is the technical aspect, which is the fundamental thing.

How did you feel when you won the award?
Ecstatic, the first time we won it was that proudest moment in my life. I felt so important, especially as there is so little recognition for designers in the North of England. The second time it was a totally different league winning the Judges Award. I t was certainly a huge boost to our confidence.

How has winning affected your work/company?
Well to begin with it’s the fabulous publicity we gained through being in Concept For Living, which brought us great credibility. People listen to you more and take you more seriously; it has been very advantageous.

What advice would you give to someone entering the awards for the first time?
Forget everyone else, concentrate on your own room set, stick to your design and do not alter it. Focus on your own work and don’t worry about what other people are doing. If you go in with a positive attitude you ve got a good chance of winning.
