| - MOVE over Linda Barker and Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen ... two local designers performed a "Changing Rooms" - style make-over - despite a flood.
-
- Not even torrential rain could mar the prize-winning transformation by Failsworth designers Matthew McCartan and Simon Ashley.
- They scooped the public award, voted for by visitors, and £500 to give to charity at the Homes Exhibition at Tatton Park, Cheshire - despite the small matter of a stream running through their room.
- The pair, who run Ashley Interiors, were given only two days to create a three-metre-square room in a marquee, but from the start they hit problems.
- "Our walls did not get there until 4 pm on the Wednesday, so we just had until 5.30 pm the following day to finish," said Matthew. "It was also a disaster on the Friday as there was torrential rain and we got flooded. There was a stream running through our room and everything was just a muddy mess."
- An industrial carpet-cleaner was a must for the duo's cream carpet, as was the unusual addition of plastic tumblers, put on the legs of furniture which had been borrowed for the occasion.
- Despite the mishaps, they managed to impress the public with their design - a cream and gold dining room complete with a Regency table, French chairs, tented ceiling and chandelier.
- It was all the more impressive because they only established their business run from home, two years ago.
-
- Donated
- They will now feature in Concept for Living magazine and have donated their prize-money to the Rainbow Family Trust.
- Matthew said: "The rain brought all the designers together and we were rushing from room to room to help each other.
- "We did not really expect to win, but we thought we had nothing to lose and we just wanted to receive some recognition.
- "It was the award chosen by the public which we really wanted to win, because you can't pull the wool over the public's eyes."
